Pre-SIHH 2014: Cartier Tank MC Skeleton – Revamping a Classic

By Nicole Lampru

It is the ideal timepiece for the modern and sophisticated gentleman. A tribute to almost 100 years of the most celebrated model of Cartier. I am referring to the Tank MC Skeleton.

Impressive visual details and a splendid mechanism have made the Tank collection one of the most sought after timepieces by haute horlogerie lovers.

However, the recently introduced Tank MC Skeleton is probably the most masculine version of this classic yet. With its square-shaped dial, defined lines, seductive curves and geometric harmony in its composition; the MC Skeleton is definitely an ode to today’s man.

Offered in palladium, the Tank MC Skeleton was introduced in 2013, boasting a 43.90mm x 39.10mm case, housing a self-winding Calibre 9611 MC movement, visible through the sapphire crystal.

Given its thickness (3.97mm), this Tank model is also the perfect companion for suit-up days, featuring traditional touches of “Cartier-legance” such as the black alligator strap and the iconic octagonal crown set with a blue sapphire.

Nonetheless, 2014 appears to be a promising year for innovation in the watchmaking industry. Cartier has recently announced the launch of the two-tone version of the Tank MC Skeleton, this time made out of 18Kt Rose gold and  showing a beautifully crafted brass movement plated with dark gray ruthenium. The edges and front side of the mechanism will be rose gold plated, presenting a different look when it comes to two-tone options in timepieces.

The strap will probably be brown alligator, although it has not been confirmed yet. I guess we will have to bite our tongues for a couple of weeks until its awaited unveiling at the SIHH (Salon International de Haute Horlogerie) in Geneva.

With this new interpretation of the acclaimed Tank collection, the Maison Parisienne seems to have taken a step forward in creativity, granting true dandies around the world the opportunity to revamp their wrists with a truly timeless piece.
