The “Portsea” by Melbourne Watch Company

By Charlotte Adams

The Melbourne Watch Company was founded only last year in 2013 and since then they have produced two timepieces using Kickstarter, a website that helps to fund exciting new creative projects from the help of internet surfers.

The two watches that were successfully funded and produced were the ‘Flinders’ and the ‘Hawthorn’ watches. Both are casual dress watches yet the ‘Hawthorn’ watch also appears sporty. Both Kickstarter campaigns reached well over the original price goals showing high potential from the new watch brand.

Once again, they have begun their third Kickstarter campaign project- the Portsea. The campaign has already reached its goal of $35,000 and is currently at $77,567 at the time of writing.

The watch features a triple calendar (with date, month and date-number dials), automatic movement and is named after a seaside in Melbourne. To coincide with its name, it is styled as a traditional marine chronometer featuring an enamel white dial, black Arabic numerals and hand-wind pocket watch movements.

The movement is the same as their Flinders and Hawthorn watches, the Miyota Cal. 9120 as it proved to be high quality and efficient enough  to be used in the new Portsea watches.

250 Portsea timepieces will be produced. 100 with a white dial, 100 with a blue dial and 50 with a white dial and rose gold plated case. The company’s logo will also be engraved on the watch’s crown and the case back will be stamped with a nautical themed scene.

Note - the production version will use regular screws rather than the hex style bolts seen on the prototypes
